Google Would Need 60 Years To Match Samsung's Annual Smartphone Sales Volume
As a kid, I was a massive fan of Google's Nexus phones because they offered a pure Android experience on devices manufactured by third-party manufacturers, which I found refreshing. After all, it allowed those manufacturers to put their spin on the devices and give them a distinct market position. Many other manufacturers, including Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, and even HTC, have released Nexus smartphones. The best part is that each phone's software is identical, despite their varied hardware designs. While the previous three generations of Google's Pixel smartphones were generally well received by critics and customers alike, things began to go south with the release of the Pixel 4.
Despite Their Quality, Google Pixel Phones Have Decades to Go Before They Can Compete with Samsung.
Google has been working hard to maintain the relevance of the Pixel portfolio, but the most recent data from IDC suggests that this is not the case.
Vlad Savov of Bloomberg has provided some eye-opening data revealing how deep Google's water is, and things are not looking good.
According to information provided by IDC, sales of Google's Pixel smartphones have stalled at just 27.6 million units since 2016, That's only 10% of Samsung's revenue in 2021. Compared to Samsung's annual smartphone sales, which total hundreds of millions, it's easy to see that Google's numbers are absurd.
Google is not wrong in any significant way. Savov continues by arguing that Google is not a competitor for Samsung but instead insurance, given that Google has no other alternative for Android sellers in the U.S., especially in light of the departures of LG and HTC from the market and the hostile reception given to Chinese phones. Only Sony is left, and its current status is no secret.
This doesn't mean the end of Google's Pixel phones. Pixel 7 series debuts tomorrow, Pixel 8 series in 2019
