YouTube ends its experiment by only allowing Premium members to view 4K content.

YouTube "turned off" the test that restricted 4K content to Premium subscribers. According to the platform's Twitter announcement, 4K content would be available to all users without region or membership limits.

Last month, some YouTube app users saw "Premium" next to the 2160p choice. Because of the low number of reports, this was likely just part of the company's A/B testing.

There's no telling how the experiment went, but it's for the best that YouTube opted to call it quits. YouTube is still interested in hearing user input on the functionality, as evidenced by a tweet posted earlier this month in Japanese.
